First Generation

“Great Grandpa” Rafael Gavilan began selling Aguas Frescas in Acapulco, Mexico.

The First Tortuga Feliz

Elia & Alejandro Gavilan opened the original La Tortuga Feliz in Mexico. When they decided to come to the United States they wanted to share their love of cooking and began selling their delicious authentic mexican food at many festivals in the Humboldt Park neighborhoods. That became an instant success and they opened up their first restaurant business, “Taqueria Gavilan” on 26th & Austin in Berwyn, IL.

Inspired by our family’s traditions, today, we have La Tortuga Feliz in Romeoville, IL. We’re proud to continue our family’s tradition of serving up delicious authentic mexican food.
